Justice, Human Rights and Prison Decongestion

Following our resolve to uphold Human Rights by Decongesting the Prisons of inmates who shouldn’t be incarcerated, HRCRC facilitated the release of 13 inmates – discharge of five (5) and bail of eight (8) from Abakaliki Correctional Centre between May and June, 2024. Remarkably, one of 5 who was discharged and acquitted had been in custody for over six years Awaiting Trial.
We continue to advocate for a better, more humane, efficient and credible Criminal Justice System in Nigeria.

HRCRC’s Board of Trustees First Official 2024 Meeting

Starting the year on a formal note, HRCRC’s Board of Trustees held had her first official meeting for the year 2024. Chairman of the Board and West Africa Regional Leader of our mother organization St. Patrick’s Missionary Society – Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Ihwo SPS presided; along with Princess Chetachi and Hon. Justice Nwanchor Secretary and Member. We also thank and welcomed Rev. Fr. Patrick Esekon SPS, a member of the Central Leadership Team of our mother organization who joined the meeting along with exofficio members Fr. Edet and George. The meeting acknowledged New Beginnings in charting the course forward for HRCRC.

HRCRC Visit to Umuogudu Oshia Ngbo Branch

As we begin retail interventions in 2023, HRCRC kicked off the year with a visit to one of our remote branches in Umogudu oshia, Ngbo…

The meeting was very insightful and encouraging for both the visitors and the host. Worthy of note is the number of female members in the branch… The missionary undertone of the branch and the visit were very encouraging … As we’re sent to the last, the lost, and the least… And with a preferential option for the poor, oppressed, and vulnerable.

We’re immensely grateful to these volunteers and the work of peace and justice they do on our behalf in the hinterlands..

2022 World Human Rights Day

2022 World Human Rights Day: So HRCRC joined the NHRC Ebonyi State office and other partners and collaborators in Ebonyi State to Commemorate the 2022 international Human Rights Day; and also the Climax of the 16 days of activism against SGBV. This year’s theme – Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for all encapsulates all our needs and demands in the Human Rights sector, especially in our Nigerian Context… Amongst other activities to mark the day was a Roadwork in Abakaliki Metropolis, whilst our Branches carried out various advocacies, sensitization, and activities in the communities…

VOTE NOT FIGHT – Election No Be War: In these days preceding the forth coming general elections in Nigeria, HRCRC is partnering INEC Ebonyi in areas of *Voter Education* and *Election Observation*; whilst leading the VOTE NOT FIGHT – _Election No Be War campaign in Ebonyi North Senatorial zone and Ebonyi State in partnership with Catch them young community initiative and other CSOs. This is all in the hope of peaceful and credible general elections in Nigeria, and in Ebonyi State.
