HRCRC Facilitates the Release of over 20 inmates of Abakaliki and Afikpo Prisons in Goal Delivery by CJ of Ebonyi State

Every person charged for committing an offence is entitled to be arraigned and tried before a competent court of law within 48 hours. However, certain alleged offenders have been remanded in prison for over two years without trial.

The Chief judge in his magnanimity, backed up by statutory provisions, discharged alleged offenders awaiting trial in a goal delivery exercise. Over 50 persons awaiting trial were discharged

HRCRC is happy to be part of this exercised, facilitating the release of a number of alleged offenders, spare headed by the lawyers in the department of Access to Justice.

HRCRC Co-Convenes National Day of Mourning in Abakaliki

28th of May, 2019 was set aside to mark National Day of Mourning in Nigeria. A day set aside to honour victims of the killings, banditry and drew government’s attention to the spate of Human Rights abuses in the country.

The Right to life is the Fundamental Human Right on which every other right hinges. This Fundamental Fundamental Human Right is now so abused and it is now a testament to the gross disrespect for all individual rights in Nigeria.

While it is a national event, in Ebonyi State, it was Co-convened by HRCRC, NEW foundation and DIG foundation. It was commemorated with a series of solemn events and activities with included a radio program on Unity FM 101.5, a solemn match around Abakaliki metropolis; and a minute silence and prayer for all the departed at 12:00pm on that day.

HRCRC Observes Elections in Ebonyi State

HRCRC is proud to have observed the conduct of the presidential elections in Ebonyi State.

Apart from a few isolated technical and logistical glitches around the state, it was an attestation to the fact that Nigeria and indeed Nigerians are slowly maturing from the adolescent democracy we’ve had into an adult one.

We sympathize with the families and friends of Igwe and Sunday who lost their lives in an attack on the eve of the elections; and wish speedy recovery on Simon, Alo and Simon who were also injured in same attack in Amagu in Ebonyi State.

Noticeable however was a very low turn out of voters; with an average of 38% of registered voters carrying out their franchise in their polling units. Many blamed it on the postponement.

As collation continues, HRCRC urges a sustenance of the peaceful and decent conduct exhibited by electorates and citizens generally.

Finally, we demand that INEC Ebonyi learn from the shortcomings in the conduct of the presidential elections and replicate the successes of the just concluded elections in the state elections coming up in a fortnight.

2018 WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

As the year winds to a close, and pre-election activities kick up a notch, HRCRC joined the UN and the rest of the world to mark the 2018 World Human Rights Day with several simultaneous activities both in Abakaliki metropolis and in the local communities via our branches.

In all of Ebonyi, we join in the loud global clamour to stand up for human rights and peculiarly clamour for the end of Electoral Violence and Improprieties with a rally across streets in Abakaliki involving sister CSOs, Volunteers, the press and Security Agencies, in solidarity with the police.

The Nigerian Police, as one of the principal agencies largely acknowledged to be principal perpetuators of human rights violations in Nigeria joined in the solidarity as a public acknowledgement and commitment to work for the upholding of human rights and the values they inhibit.
