Continuation of Prison Decongestion

Continuation of Prison Decongestion: For about 4 years, HRCRC has been representing and trying to secure the release of 36 inmates incarcerated in the Abakaliki Correctional Custodial Center (Prisons) unjustly. These inmates had been discharged by four different courts on four different occasions in the course of our interventions but their detention continued.
Gleefully, 12 of these inmates were discharged again yesterday and were released from detention. As we continue the fight to ensure the release of the others as well as other unjustly incarcerated inmates, we thank all through whose support, collaboration, and cooperation this was achieved.

HRCRC Secures the Release of Over 25 inmates from Abakaliki Prisons
HRCRC Secures the Release of Over 25 inmates from Abakaliki Prisons: Over the past 4 years, HRCRC represented about 30 inmates who were incarcerated in the Abakaliki Correctional Center (prisons) along with over 140 others in connection to a communal conflict in Ebonyi State. These individuals were denied bail and due process in courts and were detained by the state awaiting trial for over 3 years.
After a successful Alternative Dispute Resolution of said conflict facilitated by the Ebonyi State Government, over 150 awaiting trial inmates were released from detention in an atmosphere that was both exciting and broody.
HRCRC continues to advocate against the illegal and many times unjustified detention of individuals in our already oversaturated Correctional Centers that breed Human Rights Abuses, poor inhumane living conditions and practices, and other criminal tendencies.

Justice, Human Rights and Prison Decongestion

Following our resolve to uphold Human Rights by Decongesting the Prisons of inmates who shouldn’t be incarcerated, HRCRC facilitated the release of 13 inmates – discharge of five (5) and bail of eight (8) from Abakaliki Correctional Centre between May and June, 2024. Remarkably, one of 5 who was discharged and acquitted had been in custody for over six years Awaiting Trial.
We continue to advocate for a better, more humane, efficient and credible Criminal Justice System in Nigeria.
