HRCRC’s Peace Building Intervenes In Family and Dispute: So, as part of our little contributory efforts to building a more peaceful society, especially in Ebonyi, HRCRC intervened in a family land dispute that eventually metamorphosed into a communal conflict in Anyim Azuinyaba of Ishielu LGA. The deliberate intervention which lasted from the 5th of February to the 4th of July saw stages of reconciliation of the village peace committee set up by the national town union, the village head, and the entire community stakeholders.

No Police officer has the right to force you to write statement when you are arrested and detained in the Police Station.

No Police officer has the right to force you to write a statement when you are arrested and detained at the Police Station.

It should be noted that writing or giving statements in police custody should be a matter of free will and not compulsion.

You also have a right to remain silent and ask that your lawyer is around before you say or write anything and if you don’t have a lawyer, you can choose the person of your choice to be around before you say Anything.

According to the Nigeria Police Act, 2020 and the Administration Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, suspects have the right to decide whether they want to write statements.

Section 60 of the Nigeria Police Act and section 17 of the ACJA state that writing statements by a suspect should be voluntary. The Police Act states, “where a suspect is arrested on allegation of having committed an offense, his statement shall be taken, “If he so wishes to make a statement”.

HRCRC Amidst Other CSO’s Meets with Ebonyi Commissioner of Grants: Amidst other strategic meets, HRCRC today joined USAID Partners, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, MDAs, CSOs amongst others in Ebonyi State; in a first meeting with the newly appointed Commissioner for Grants and Donor agencies; chatting the way forward for development in the state.

HRCRC Marks Her Annual Safeguarding Week

HRCRC Marks Her Annual Safeguarding Week: And so HRCRC marked her annual Safeguarding for Children and vulnerable adults week this past week. This Annual event is facilitated by our mother organization – St. Patrick’s Missionary Society SPMS through her Safeguarding Officer for West Africa – Raphael Okusaga.

Events kicked off with an in-house meeting for staff on Gender Referral Pathways in Ebonyi State on Thursday.
Friday Started with Safeguarding and Trauma Training for the Ebonyi State Gender Based Violence GBV Taskforce. This task force is a multi-sectoral group made of different line organizations, ministries, and agencies; with HRCRC a member of the Steering Committee. The training was Facilitated by Raphael Okusaga.
HRCRC thereafter visited the Ebonyi State Remand Home for Juveniles and an Orphanage for vulnerable children and the helpless run by Trinitarian Missionary Sisters; discussing safeguarding and attendant policies at each instance.
Saturday marked the grand finale with a refresher workshop on safeguarding, trauma, and self-care for HRCRC staff and volunteers; followed by a Recommitment and signing of recommitment to safeguarding for all staff and volunteers.
Our deepest gratitude to SPS, especially her District of West Africa, to the safeguarding office, and to Raphael Okusaga for coming.

HRCRC Hosts Ebonyi Civil Society Situation Room Meeting: So in furtherance of HRCRC’s Commitment to a unified and viable Civil Society Umbrella in Ebonyi State, HRCRC yesterday hosted the Board and Governing Council Meeting, then the Executive Meeting, and finally a General Meeting of the Ebonyi State Civil Society Network, now officially registered with the CAC and the State Ministry of Women and Social Development as the Ebonyi State Civil Society Situation Room; a nonpartisan independent coalition.
